At Three Little Birds Perinatal, we are a dedicated team of skilled clinicians, including psychologists, social workers, and counsellors, all with extensive expertise and additional training in perinatal and antenatal mental health. We specialize in supporting a variety of perinatal presentations such as perinatal depression and anxiety, adjustment to parenting, birth trauma, and more.
Perinatal refers to the period of life spanning pregnancy (including pre-pregnancy planning), across birth experiences, and into the postnatal period, following the life of a baby and their parents up to three years. This phase of life is foundational for families, and it is also a time when women are most vulnerable to experiencing mental health conditions. New parents often face unforeseen growth and adaptation within an environment of decreased supports and increased stress.
We are passionate about supporting parents throughout different stages of their parenthood journey, from conception and fertility planning to postnatal care. We believe that parents deserve all the support they can get, right from the very start. It truly takes a village to raise a child, and we are committed to being a part of yours.
Our perinatal services can be easily accessed at two locations:
Morningside (convenient for residents of Hawthorne, Balmoral, Norman Park, and Cannon Hill)
Red Hill (convenient for residents of Paddington, Kelvin Grove, Ashgrove, and Newmarket).
Perinatal depression includes depression during pregnancy (antenatal depression) and after childbirth (postnatal depression). Symptoms can range from persistent sadness and low energy to feelings of hopelessness and guilt. Early intervention by a Brisbane psychologist is key to supporting mothers through this difficult period.
Anxiety disorders during the perinatal period can include generalized anxiety, panic attacks, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). These disorders may manifest as excessive worry about the baby’s health, intrusive thoughts, or compulsive behaviours aimed at preventing harm. Our Brisbane-based counsellors are skilled in providing strategies to manage these symptoms effectively.
Some women may experience birth trauma, leading to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This can be due to a traumatic delivery, complications during childbirth, or feelings of helplessness during the birthing process. Symptoms include flashbacks, nightmares, and severe anxiety. Our Brisbane-based psychologists are experienced in helping families to work through these traumatic experiences.
Women with bipolar disorder may experience mood swings that range from manic or hypomanic episodes to severe depression during the perinatal period. Our local Brisbane-based mental health professionals can help you manage these mood fluctuations.
The loss of a pregnancy, stillbirth, or infant death can lead to profound grief. Mothers and families may experience intense sadness, guilt, and a range of other emotions that require sensitive and supportive care. At Three Little Birds, our Brisbane-based psychologists and counsellors offer compassionate support during these difficult times.
A rare but severe mental health condition, postpartum psychosis, typically occurs within the first few weeks after childbirth. It involves symptoms like hallucinations, delusions, severe mood swings, and confusion, and it requires immediate medical attention. Our Brisbane-based counsellors and psychologists are trained to recognize and respond to these symptoms swiftly.
At Three Little Birds Perinatal in Brisbane, we recognize that the journey into fatherhood can bring unexpected emotional challenges. Fathers, often overlooked in discussions about perinatal mental health, can experience a range of issues, from postnatal depression and heightened anxiety to the pressures of adjusting to new responsibilities. These struggles are just as significant and deserve the same attention and care. Our dedicated team of Brisbane psychologists and Brisbane counsellors is here to support fathers through these transitions, providing a safe space to explore their feelings, develop coping strategies, and strengthen their mental resilience. By addressing these concerns early on, we help fathers build a strong foundation for their well-being, which is essential for nurturing a healthy and supportive family environment. At Three Little Birds Perinatal, we're committed to ensuring that fathers receive the comprehensive care they need as they embark on this life-changing journey.
